E. Scott Stanton
District Circuit Court Judge

E. Scott Stanton

After graduating from the WVU College of Law in 1986, I moved here to work and raise a family. In 2003 for several reasons, I took a job to become the Chief Deputy Public Defender of Fayette County. I am leaving  that job this February to serve the people of Nicholas County in whatever capacity they ask to assume. I’ve always maintained my residency here in Nicholas County. My daughter, who teaches at NCHS and my granddaughter live here as well.

I think I’m very qualified to become the Circuit Judge of this County for three compelling reasons: my age, my work history and my experience.

First, I am sixty-two (62) years old. This is for an eight (8) year term starting in January one year from now. I’m not yet ready to retire, but I will be at the end of my term. I promise you I will not be one of those elected officials who try to hang on to positions forever.

Second is my work history. By that I mean this is a job to me. I’m not running for this position for political gain or sentimental value. I’ve been working in a difficult job in a neighboring county for twenty-one years. I could have easily stayed there and retired from there with benefits. I will not be going back to Fayetteville. I will work here, either as your Circuit Judge or as a lawyer with a small practice here in Nicholas County. This is a job I can walk to rather than drive 50 miles a day.

Third is my experience. I’ve been a lawyer for nearly thirty-eight (38) years. My career has been in the Courtroom. Most lawyer’s make their careers in record rooms and corporate boardrooms. Nothing wrong with that. My career has been representing real clients in Courtroom settings. I’ve been in hearings in thirteen (13) different Counties. I’ve seen what works, and what doesn’t. I’ve been involved in over one hundred jury trials during that time, representing civil and criminal clients. When I wrap up my time in Fayetteville I will have had twelve jury trials in the last nineteen months, including three murder trials. I believe I have as much Courtroom experience as any lawyer in this, or surrounding jurisdiction.

Thank you for listening to me and I would greatly appreciate your support on May 14, 2024!
